Bringing greetings to the KW Turkish Festival

July 10, 2011

I was pleased to have the opportunity to tour the displays, try some of the delicacies, and attempt an Ebru under the guide of Shuhrat Ochilov, a University of Waterloo PhD student.

I learned about the art of Ebru – water colour marbling – from Feyza Baykan, who, after two years of practice in the art, has a fantastic touch and was a great teacher.

If you’re reading this before 7 p.m., remember to head down to the Waterloo Public Square and catch the remainder of the wonderful KW Turkish Festival, now in its second year at our fantastic square.

Thank you to the Ertugrul Education Society for the invitation and for all of the work in putting this great event on, as well as for helping to integrate Turkish newcomers into our diverse community.

Thank you as well to Kitchener Councillor, Dan Glenn-Graham, for coming as well. I understand that in addition to enjoying the wonderful Waterloo weather and this great festival, he was also promoting next Sunday’s square2square, which will be a great way to move by bike or on foot from our Public Square to Kitchener’s Civic Square on our public right-of-way without having to compete with cars. I look forward to seeing all of you out on King St. in a week.
