Reflections on the Ward 6 Debate

October 6, 2010

Last night, the Waterloo Voter Support Committee hosted a debate for the Ward 6 candidates. It was well attended by residents, who were looking to make an informed decision on or before October 25.

I was pleased with the thoughtfulness of the questions asked by both the moderator and, through him, by the audience. It demonstrated further what I already knew was true of my Ward 6 neighbours: we love our community and want to make sure our councillor understands how to work with everyone to make it even stronger.

I appreciated the opportunity to talk about my vision for Waterloo but also about my thoughtful and detailed platform on how to move us forward, together.

One of my opponents stated repeatedly that he believed that listening was his responsible vision, suggesting that simply listening will produce the solutions we need. As I stated last night, “I think one of the things Council needs to do is understand where the people are coming from, but be able to think through complicated issues, ask solid questions, get the knowledge you need, and be able to build consensus around those solutions.”

This is the fresh approach and new leadership that I will bring to Council if you give me the honour of your vote on October 25.

I look forward to continuing this important conversation with you at your door for these last few weeks of the campaign and, if you and your neighbours choose me to be your voice on Council, to working hard with you for the next four years.
